First of all, Part VI: Jason Lives is the best film in the franchise. It feels like the first one to really give the Jason that people have in their minds. He has supernatural strength and survivability and feels like a supernatural, unstoppable force.

Probably my hottest take is that my top 5 includes 3 films that letterboxd users rank in the bottom 5. That includes Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Part V: A New Beginning, and the 2009 reboot. I’m going to explain why these are actually good and everyone is wrong.

letterboxd First, Friday the 13th (2009). The setup of the mythology is kinda shaky, but I like that they made Jason seem more like a real person. He runs instead of lumbering, he sets traps, & has alarms set up. He seems like an actual person who thinks, which works. Also, So. Many. Kills!

letterboxd Second, Part V: A New Beginning. The best thing about this is Reggie the Reckless. Maybe the best character in the entire franchise. The final battle is really well done and I like that Tommy Jarvis puts the mask on at the end. Wish they would have done something more with that.

letterboxd letterboxd And most importantly, Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. I don’t understand why people don’t like this one. A kid boxes with Jason and tires himself out then the kid say’s “take your best shot” and Jason literally punches his head off. This movie rules.

Now, the 2nd highest rated on letterboxd, Part IV: The Final Chapter. Really like this. Good story, good acting, good kills. I just really hate when little Tommy Jarvis does the makeup and haircut thing to look like young Jason. It’s stupid and drops it from 1st to 6th for me.

letterboxd My second hottest take is that Jason X and Jason Goes to Hell are not the 2 worst. It’s actually Part VII: The New Blood followed by Part III. For Part VII, I like the telekinesis shit. Other than that, the story is pretty rote and the kills are all edited to not show anything.

letterboxd For Part 3, I really hated Jason. The actor has the wrong body type and just loafs around. He’s not at all menacing. They keep filming him from weird overheard angles that make him look stupid. Some real weird choices for the first film in the franchise where he wears the mask.

letterboxd Ok, let’s talk about Jason X. In Jason X, Jason goes to space.

letterboxd Jason Goes to Hell: Sorry, this isn’t a Jason movie. He’s barely in it. It’s actually kind of good if you just remove the killer being Jason. You can’t just invent a mythology that has zero connection to the series and expect me to accept it.

letterboxd Freddy vs Jason is ok. They make a big deal about Jason being afraid of water, but he swims in like every movie and it was never an issue.

letterboxd Part 2 is wild because it’s 2 movies in and we still don’t have the classic Jason with mask and machete. He wears a bag with one eye hole for some reason. I like that he has a little shack with a shrine to his dead mother.

letterboxd And finally, Friday the 13th. What is there to say? It’s a classic for a reason. Jason was her son, and it was his birthday. What did you expect her to do?
